CONGRATS to our SPARTAN B squad

Heya FAM. I’m really proud of what we achieved as a squad this season. It’s been a truely amazing, fun and joyous playing with this team. Victorious against a team that was the clear favourite going into the finals (IF you hadnt kept track of the B’s progress) Best revenge game opportunity we could have ever hoped to be given and what a way to close out to get the job done as a team and take out the championship. Everyone has pitched in towards to making this campaign very memorable experienced

CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAE!!!

And commiserations to our A squad who fought valiantly but was bested right on the buzzer. Heart breaking as was right there to steal the W. Jordan had an epic game to carry the depleted squad right through to the end. Will come back bigger and stronger next season…

2020 Summer Campaign Finals is HERE

CSBA now moves into the pointy end of the season, proudly with all four Spartan Squads entering into the Semi Finals and a chance to enter into the final dance for the Summer Competition.

We wish all our teams all the very best in their up and coming games!

CSBA 2020 Summer League Final Stretch – Comp Update

Heya teams and awesome supporters… its been a while… and my sincere apologies for being so tardy with the post! Outside of basketball – aka family and work has be a little busy. Havent been able to get on here to write up any fun game blogs and for that I am sorry.

I bring good news … and that we are into the final stages of the regular season with all teams poised to make the play offs.

Our A’s are fighting for top spot on the ladder and with two games left, are keen to improve on in game rotations and defense for a strong showing during the pointy end.

B’s had recently overcame their bane team in FBC with a smarter approach to the game and earning themselves top spot on their ladder. Few tough games ahead but a welcome sign leading into the finals after being hot and cold in previous games.

C’s Light suffered their biggest loss last game but were plagued with injuries and absences. The focus now will be to Monday nights to improve their focus in the ultimate aim to cement a spot in the top four by securing one more victory out of the two games left. Currently sitting fourth on the ladder.

C’s Dark rolls through this season with more emphatic team plays and focus. Back to back now of stellar games, with the prior game to last week being an authoritative win with four truely focused team mates on the court. Placed one spot ahead on Light in third spot

CSBA 2020 Summer League is HERE

After a decent 2019 *end of year season showing from A’s to C’s, we move straight into the 2020 Summer League to close out 2020.

Our Monday training group has grown with more Spartan Brothers joining the ranks in competition.

We are pleased to announce that we are fielding TWO C teams in prep for next season and there is plans to yield a further team in a higher division.

We welcome the new additions and hope they bring the joy to the game

Thats FOUR teams competing in the THURSDAY CSBA Competition.

As the South Sydney Spartans, we’re big on family the atmosphere and keen on players who are team focused, have the right attitude and good temperament.

Our players are from all backgrounds, beliefs, diets and skill levels but the collective focus is the same – everyone is onboard for making BBall fun.

If this approach to the game of Basketball is appealing to you and of one that you can be a positive and active contributor to our group…

Please get in contact with JB to a part of the preparation to 2021, as we look to move into various competitions and divisions across Sydney.

Thanks very much.

SPARTANS GRAND FINAL REPORT

3MC’s GF Spartans vs Newtown Wolves

This was a good match up and fitting for a finals berth.

Both teams kept the game close throughout most of the match with neither side being able to kick away. Wolves just had enough in the tank to secure the W and place our boys as runners up. A massive effort by all our players who represented our black and yellow proudly. Its nice to see the guys go from strength to strength throughout the season.

Sorry to have kept this report short… Blame Rod who really should put more into the team. The far left guy pictured below. Oh and CoVid who does not allow you to watch and support from the sideline.

Its play and then … GTFO

Well done peeps

What a freaking handsome bunch!
Onto next season Lads!

3MA’s GF Spartans vs Doosters

Scene was set for the 3 Mens A GF. Both teams had a solid regular season run with a high percentage of W vs Played. Spartans A’s copped a hiding the first time these two teams met during the regular season. The second showdown had our A’s come away with the narrow victory by playing one of their best collective team games keeping the Spartans A run of solid games going against all teams …. after that particular loss against the Doosters

We had Alz restricted to light minutes due to a niggling shoulder injury but our full squad turned up and played great Spartans Team Basketball.

Defence was kept tight once again and with the ability to go on a scoring run, our A’s managed to kick away at the beginning of the second period. After a spate of unforced errors, bad shot selection and general close out jitters moving into the latter half of the period … a much needed time out and yelling from an old man refocused our game. We truly had fought hard to get here and only our best as a team would do.

Ball movement was a beautiful sight to see as our big men attacked the seams and made the layups off well timed entry passes.

We had the (much) old guys get the ball to close out the game.

It was a glorious title win for the A’s

Four Years, Eleven seasons. Thats how long its been since out last *chip

Victory tasted like a winners Sundae!!

Thanks to all our squad. It was a joy to be a part of. Maybe I can get some minutes next time… or at least start cutting oranges.

Whats that?! Is that a WINNERS SUNDAE?!
Proud of you boyz!!
Dont mind the score. The real story is that the Spartans were down 3 and #7 got a buzzer beater 3, fouled and hit the freethrow to win the game

Actually … I’m just happy that Jordan didn’t once again steal the meagre points I earned this game.

SPARTANS SEMI-FINALS CAMPAIGN

Hello players, fans and friends. With the regular season done and dusted… we are pleased to announce that our teams had made it into the post season after a long CoVid affected regular season
Witnessing sea of yellow and black throughout the gym, it was a proud moment watching all the players representing our close knit group so well.
HUGE congrats to all the team members in making it to the semi finals and giving it their best.

Spartan Cs vs Branca United

This was a tough, low scoring game with all players putting in the effort on defence. With buckets seemingly hard to come by, there were some great plays which led to points conversions. Some masterful key moments even caught on camera which is much better than listening to Rod and how he swatted away 5 shots to give himself a fast break, self assist of the back board to windmill dunk over 3 defenders. A self proclaimed signature move of his he’s been working on. A wins a win and now to focus on using the last few W’s to bring home the bacon.

W!! 17 – 13

and with that W move into the FINALS

Well done

Spartan Bs vs FBC

Looking to bounce back from last weeks reg season loss to the same team, the B boys played a solid game for the most part and kicked ahead by 10 points deep into the second half and were looking good to seal the game. Slowly though, there was a change in momentum with the gap being gradually whittled away with FBC players hitting jumpers and in turn B’s presenting some predicable offense and tentativeness from the back court not drawing defenders out and going to the rim. Lach being heavily leaned on in providing buckets and others being reluctant to shoot. The B’s defense was sporadically great and G getting some clutch steals and denials but the occasional breakdown led to FBC knocking down open shots and easier layups. It was a nail biter that the shouting from the sidelines could be heard by C’s and A’s So close was this game it went into overtime, lucky when FBC could not seal the game on the buzzer with an unconverted and one play.

With C’s now supporting via the exit door and A’s allowed to go into the grandstand and yell encouragement, there was hope to will the boys on the court to victory.

FBC got off to a start in extra time but the Bs hung in there once again showing true grit just marred by crucial turnovers at pivotal in game moments. Still… there was another chance to make it go to 2OT with 3 seconds to go but just couldn’t get the shot in the end.

Tough L 47 – 49

Chin up boys. You did yourselves and our group proud representing the Spartans. We will pull together as a group and focus on getting you guys STRONGER

Spartans As vs Newtown Warriors

Facing a new and improved Warriors unit, this was going to be a challenging semi finals match up against size, shooters and good team chemistry. The A’s would need to be composed and efficient at both ends of the floor in this game. Don’t mind Nik who still opted to wear his nuggety shoes, REFUSING to play in nothing but the ankle swelling kicks. Alz did not look like the weapon he can be when healthy, nursing a significant shoulder injury so it was time for everyone to step up a notch.
First half started off with Jordy hitting a 3 to open up the scoring and the boys seemingly in control throughout the game. Sure it was a game of runs but late into the first we had a nice healthy 8 pt lead. A lead that is, until JB subbed off for a wee wee with Jordan later joining the bench. With turnovers and forced plays, A’s found themselves being 2pts down at the half and a few grim faces in the huddle.
Reminding the team its all about composure, confidence and trusting your team mates, we stepped onto the court with renewed focus…
and Franco fouling to give the warriors a converted and 1. Now down by 5 it was time to go to work. Lots of bucket trading with Franco landing and twisting his ankle mid way through the half and having to step off. Boss still managed to put the rock through the net for 2 to bring us within 1. A few plays later, the A’s found themselves 5pts down and facing an up hill battle. ENTER Nuggety shoes, Leb Muscle, BimBimBap, Steve Blake Dopple directed by the Asian Wolverine. With the right substitutions in Sim and Stuz, the dream team went on a mammoth run at one end and locked it down on the other. There were great defensive stops and Warrior turnovers followed by purposeful Spartan A attacks to the bucket, with fantastic offensive rebounds to get well executed second chance looks. The swinging result being a 15 point lead in favour of the A’s and welcomed composure to bring the game home for the W.
Not content on a decent points haul, Blakes dopple stole 50 percent of JB’s points in the stat sheet. No matter. Team win.

BOOM

W 53 – 45

and a trip to the FINALS

Congrats Boys

Lets get to work on Monday and bring it home!!!

Basketball is back. Time to get the Championship(*)

2020 THU09JUL Post Game Report RND8

Catch up round for Rain Cancelled THU05MAR

Such a good feeling to step back onto the court, geared up and playing competition again. Both comp and training has resumed, though catered for the lockdown gained weight (light runs) kicking off the first training sessions in months.

A solid result for our Spartans this week. 3 / 3 means winners Sundae!

Spartan A’s vs Warriors
Even though training sessions were light on Monday, the A’s moved the ball around well throughout game time on Thurs and took goods shots. Jordan shot well from deep. It helped that Franco was on fire and aggressive getting to the bucket. He had big shoulders that night which is good, because JB got really fat during the lock down and needed to be carried to a win.
W 48 – 39

Spartans B’s vs Inner West Life
With a much improved TEAM vibe this season, the B’s rotation looks good from the start and kicked away to a good points buffer in the first half. A nice turn around from previous games. The second half was a closely contested ball game as IWL slowly started to chip away at the deficit to eventually getting ahead by a single point. It was clear that fatigue started to roll into the Spartan camp. But this is Sparta, a strong rally was had back to snatch the lead first with Lach getting an and 1 and then Timmy and Mick combining some BIG presence to get to the line and score some vital buckets with an amazing finish as Micky hit TWO clutch free throws to provide an end game buffer to seal the W.
W 30 – 28

Spartans C’s vs YMCA Sky Blue
C’s fielded just enough Spartans to make a team, no subs. Joely and Brunz combining for the ultimate dynamic duo on the offensive end, with Joely getting the first three buckets of the game from the tip off. Just like the other Divs, the C’s moves the ball relatively well and with this game, led from start to finish. Way to go boyz!
W 41 – 33
